Our Birthstone Guide

A birthstone is a stone that represents your birth month, and each stone represents something different. Just like the zodiac signs, there are 12 different stones to represent each month. 

Historically, birthstones can be traced back to the Breastplate of Aaron, as described in the Book of Exodus in the Bible. This breastplate depicts 12 gemstones that represented the 12 tribes of Israel. As time went on, scholars started to realize the connection between the stones and the zodiac signs. 

Even though the birthstones have a religious background, the list we know today was made by what was known then as Jewelers of America, and Britain National Association of Goldsmiths created their own list. 

These are birthstones for each month, according to Jewelers of America (2019):  


January-Garnet


This stone symbolizes love and friendship. It is also said that garnets have healing powers and that they could cure depression and liver diseases. This gemstone is known to be a durable stone, which makes it the perfect stone to represent the zodiac sign Capricorn.


February-Amethyst


Amethyst is the birthstone for those born in February, it symbolizes sincerity and peace. The purple color of the amethyst is said to be calming and cleansing. The amethyst is also given on the 6th anniversary.


March-Aquamarine

 


Due to its sea-like color, Aquamarine is associated with serenity and harmony, and it's because of its name, color, and history as the stone worn by the Egyptians to preserve their energy, it was selected as the perfect gemstone for those born in March, and under the zodiac sign Pisces whose symbol is also a fish. 


April-Diamond


The diamond represents love and commitment. It’s thought that the diamond brings inner strength and balance. When combined with an amethyst, it can boost the wearers' energy. 


May-Emerald


The emerald is one of the most beautiful stones, it symbolizes romance, rebirth, and hope. It’s believed that due to its deep green color it provides the wearer encouragement and optimism to fulfill their dreams.


June-Light Amethyst


June is the start of the summer and is the month of the zodiac sign Cancer, both related to joy and innocence. To some people, the birthstone for June is the Pearl, and to others Light Amethyst.


July-Ruby


Its fiery red has made this stone associated with strong emotions such as passion, but it’s also believed to be a symbol of protection and prosperity.  


August-Peridot


This stone is known for its symbolism, it’s said to protect you from negativity and is known as a joyful stone, helping the wearer to have an open heart. 


September-Sapphire

This stone symbolizes intelligence and wisdom. Sapphire is said to bring good fortune to the wearer. Historically, Sapphire has been used to calm the mind and to help with depression. 


October- Rose

Opal symbolizes faithfulness and confidence. Opal is a gemstone used to find calmness, peace, and quiet. The opal is a tone with deeply spiritual symbolism.


November-Topaz

This gemstone is known as an energy booster. It is said that Topaz brings happiness and prosperity to the wearer. 


December-Blue Topaz

Due to the color of the blue topaz, this gemstone represents honesty and clarity. It’s associated with trust and open communication, and it has made this stone a public favorite to gift for anniversary number 4.
